On Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 17:29:30 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), the region of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, was struck by a tectonic earthquake. The analysis by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) indicated that this earthquake had updated parameters with a magnitude of M5.9.

The epicenter of the Kupang earthquake was located at the coordinates 9.70° S; 124.05° E, on land 37 km northeast of Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 80 km. The earthquake that occurred was of the intermediate type, caused by deformation within the tectonic plates (intra-slab).

The results of the source mechanism analysis showed that this earthquake in Northern Lombok had a combination movement mechanism of oblique downward movement (oblique normal).
